| Boxer Bika chasing a fight with Mundine | | Posted Monday, October 16, 2006 7:04:29 AM by Blog57 Team | | Anthony Mundine is the next target for Australian-Cameroonian Sakio Bika after he gave a Joe Calzaghe a genuine test in the Welshman's defence of his IBF and WBO super-middleweight belts on the weekend. Bika, a 10-1 outsider, put up a spirited fight against one of the world's best pound-for-pound boxers in a rough-house 12 rounds at MEN Arena in Manchester. Calzaghe, who has held the WBO crown for nine years, has rarely if ever had a more difficult night in the ring and left bruised and battered but still victorious in a unanimous decision. The Welshman has campaigned exclusively in Europe but his burgeoning reputation meant this fight was beamed back to the US, aiding his chances of cracking into the lucrative US market. Bika was meant to be a pawn in that plan, but the Cameroonian Olympian turned Australian citizen threatened to put a major spanner in Calzaghe's career plans when he cut and staggered the Welshman over the 12 rounds.... | |

| | | Too close for comfort | | Posted Saturday, September 30, 2006 10:59:45 AM by Blog57 Team | | DETROIT -- Seat belts fastened? Close to landing, the Tigers have encountered some choppy air. With three games remaining they still don't know where, or against whom, their first postseason since 1987 will begin. Their comfort, of course, lies in the fact that it will begin. Whether against the Yankees or the A's, their precious postseason will definitely begin. But if you thought the Tigers would breeze to the next level of accomplishment, and clinch first place in the American League Central with a snap of their fingers and a simple swing of their bats, the Toronto Blue Jays stopped by to say they wouldn't. With their playoff spot safely tucked away, but not because it was, the Tigers lost two of three to the Blue Jays -- who left town on the heels of Thursday's 8-6 victory.... | |

| | | Children's safety taking back seat to convenience | | Posted Sunday, September 10, 2006 9:08:05 PM by Blog57 Team | | CHICAGO -- Despite recent laws designed to make child safety seats easier to use in cars and light trucks, a vast majority of parents still install them incorrectly. That's the conclusion of experts such as Sean McGrath, a Crystal Lake, Ill., police officer and certified child seat inspector and instructor, who says as many as 90 percent of child seats are improperly used. Eugene Richardson, a Streamwood Police Department public education safety officer who also inspects hundreds of installed seats annually, says that number could be low. This chronic problem was supposed to be solved four years ago, when a universal mounting system for vehicles and child seats took effect. Called LATCH, for lower anchors and tethers for children, Richardson says its effects are limited by the number of seats available and vehicles they have to fit.... | |

"This will be my second year with the district, so I'm excited about another year. For me, this year isn't so much about learning but moving forward."Ney said one of the major ways the school district is moving forward this fall is by the hiring of 10 new teachers and about five more employees, including bus drivers and kitchen staff. However, this year also marks the beginning of a new era of the school district's board of education. Ney said School Board President Don Conway, who has served the board for 16 years, is not running for re-election, and the district is awaiting a nomination to fill the vacant seat on the board."We have no one that has taken out papers for that position," Ney said.... | |

| | | MHP targets seat belts, DUIs | | Posted Sunday, August 20, 2006 10:59:45 AM by Blog57 Team | | RICHLAND ? Mississippi drivers need not wait until Labor Day to be extra cautious on the road. More than 350 officers of the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol have been asked to postpone vacations until after the holiday to combat drunken driving and increase seat-belt use. The campaign, which kicked off Friday, includes roadblocks, increased patrols and troopers working overtime. Charlie Jackson, director of the department's statistical division, pointed to the 349 alcohol-related deaths on Mississippi roads last year to show the importance of curbing drunken driving. Jackson was speaking to a gathering of dozens of law enforcement officers from around the state at the Richland Community Center. "These numbers represent somebody's mother and father, brother and sister, their children," Jackson said.... | |

| | | Wright Expects Domination Of Mosley | | Posted Tuesday, August 08, 2006 5:00:59 AM by Blog57 Team | | Winky Wright told reporters in Tampa that his fight against Shane Mosley is a done deal and will be in the at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on November 20th. "I'm happy about it. I get to get paid,'' Wright said. "I expect it to go about the same way as before. Just to dominate the whole fight.'' The November bout will only be for Wright's WBA title, as everyone knows, he was stripped of the other two belts for not facing the mandatory challengers of each belt. "I wanted Trinidad, but I have to take who they gave to me. Mosley gave me the chance to be the undisputed champion, so I have to give him another chance,'' Wright said. "If I stay focused and do what I have to do, then that's that.'' .... | |

| | | PWINSIDER Q&A: HOLDING TWO BELTS AT ONCE, JOHN CENA, TRIPLE H AND MORE | | Posted Friday, August 04, 2006 6:57:10 AM by Blog57 Team | | I can recall back when Bill Goldberg won the WCW Championship, that he also held the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship. At that time, WCW officials stripped Goldberg of the U.S. title due to a rule that you could not hold both titles at the same time. My first question is, has anyone ever won the WWE Championship while holding the IC Title? My second question is, does WWE go by this rule as well, or would they allow them to hold both titles? Yes, the Ultimate Warrior was the Intercontinental Champion at Wrestlemania VI when he defeated Hulk Hogan for the WWF World Heavyweight Title. Warrior had to vacate the Intercontinental Title as a result. I've been a wrestling fan for over fifteen years now, and I've never seen such boring, non-skill champion as Jon Cena, so why do they STILL keep the belt on him? Honestly in my opinion WWE need a new champion Face Or Heel because Cena is boring everybody.... | |

| | | Seat belt exemptions | | Posted Sunday, July 23, 2006 1:00:08 AM by Blog57 Team | | Other states with primary seat belt laws are dealing with issues involving medical exemptions. In New York, the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee and Department of Health reviewed various circumstances for remaining unbuckled and deemed most of them insufficient for receiving deferments. Musculoskeletal conditions or deformities: For conditions such as arthritis of the neck; patients may unbuckle briefly to turn around while backing up but should not be issued exemptions. Some types of body casts may be given exemptions only for the period of treatment. Pacemakers implanted below the collar bone: Seat belts should pose no problem to pacemakers. If irritation results from wearing a seat belt over a recently implanted pacemaker, place padding between the belt and the skin.... | |

| | | Seat-belt campaign targets unbuckled kids | | Posted Wednesday, July 19, 2006 7:00:24 PM by Blog57 Team | | DERRY - Police caught dozens of children not wearing their seat belts during a recent compliance check. Seven officers set up posts along busy roads and intersections and looked for children under 18 not wearing their seat belts for two weeks, from May 22 to June 4. State law requires that all drivers and passengers under 18 wear seat belts. During that period, police said they checked 5,987 vehicles. Of those, 43 passengers or drivers were issued warnings and 11 given summonses, forcing them to pay a $50 fine. If they are caught a second time not wearing a seatbelt, they must pay $100. The effort was part of the "Join the Clique - Buckle Up New Hampshire" seat-belt campaign sponsored by the Department of Transportation. This is the second year of the campaign. Last year's effort led to 14 summonses and 48 warnings.... | |

| | | House passes seat belt mandate | | Posted Friday, July 07, 2006 9:03:31 AM by Blog57 Team | | CHARLOTTE -- The North Carolina House of Representatives passed a bill Thursday that would require everybody to wear a seat belt in passenger vehicles. Right now, people 16 and over arent required to buckle up if theyre riding in the back seat. The change sounds good to Sgt. C.G. Logan of the North Carolina Highway Patrol. If youre in a car and youre hit in the rear, the person in the back seat can come up and make contact with the driver, Logan said. Theyll come over the drivers seat, they can hit them, knock heads and things like that. And now youve got two injuries." The original legislation proposed a $75 penalty that includes fines and court costs. But representatives reduced the fine to $10 Thursday before voting in favor of the bill 61-44. It now goes to the Senate for concurrence.... | |
