Maybe it was the desire or need to keep precious gemstones or pearls safe. If they're set in a silver or gold base, and than hang from the earlobe, there are better chances for them to stay there...
 The basic shape of earrings for pierced ears, was the hoop. After making a comeback a few years back, hoop earring look like they're here to stay.
Easy and uncomplicated to insert, they are now decorated with beads of all kinds, making a colorful statement, adding life to black, which is, funny as it may sound, "the new black" this season. Chandelier earrings are still one the hottest trends at the moment, elongating necks, helping even girls with no neck, look like a swan.
Make sure you choose the right chandelier earring for you. A broad shaped, highly detailed one is fine if you have a thin neck, but if you're a bit on the fuller side, opt for the long narrow earrings.
If those earrings are not your cup of tea, I haven't heard diamond, sapphire, ruby or emerald stud earrings have gone out of style...
