What's that dangling from you ears?
Posted Thursday, February 02, 2006 2:22:29 PM by Kate Grant

Whatever made our ancestors pierce their ears? Maybe it was the desire or need to keep precious gemstones or pearls safe. If they're set in a silver or gold base, and than hang from the earlobe, there are better chances for them to stay there...

EarringsThe basic shape of earrings for pierced ears, was the hoop. After making a comeback a few years back, hoop earring look like they're here to stay.

Easy and uncomplicated to insert, they are now decorated with beads of all kinds, making a colorful statement, adding life to black, which is, funny as it may sound, "the new black" this season. Chandelier earrings are still one the hottest trends at the moment, elongating necks, helping even girls with no neck, look like a swan.

Make sure you choose the right chandelier earring for you. A broad shaped, highly detailed one is fine if you have a thin neck, but if you're a bit on the fuller side, opt for the long narrow earrings.

If those earrings are not your cup of tea, I haven't heard diamond, sapphire, ruby or emerald stud earrings have gone out of style...

New shoe line inspired by Imelda Marcos

MANILA, Philippines, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- A new shoe line inspired by Imelda Marcos, the widow of Philippines dictator Ferdinand Marcos, is set for an international launch. The fashion line, aptly entitled the Imelda Collection after the famed shoe collector, will be launched by her daughter Imee Marcos and two grandsons, and also will include clothing and jewelry, said the Los Angeles Times. "She's always been practical," said Imee. "When it came to fashion, she recycled. She made outfits from old beads and dismembered earrings. And she customized, cutting sleeves and putting diamonds on shoes. Without even knowing it, she was a fashion brand all to herself." The elder Marcos not only rose to fame as an international political figure, but was recognized for her apparent obsession with shoes....

White Hot Summer Trends In Jewellery
Posted Friday, October 20, 2006 11:00:25 AM by Blog57 Team
Toss out the dangly earrings and the gaudy beads along with that gypsy skirt and all the other boho looks from last summer. That’s the fashion advice from jewellery maestro, Angela Daniel who has just released a new collection of gems and stones to accentuate and enhance this summer’s styles. Daniel’s two stores in Newmarket’s Nuffield Street and at Sylvia Park are important fashion destinations to add the ultimate pieces to complete the hottest looks for summer. Angela says clean out your jewellery box of all that boho clutter if you want this season’s sharpest looks to really shine. “Jewellery for this season has really calmed down with simple, striking, clean lines in natural stones that are almost geometric in their simplicity.” She recommends stand-out natural stones like white marble for an opaque effect and white onyx for shine. White on white is a dazzling combination in summer combining the very latest in fashion trend and jewellery design....

He pleads for leniency, gets it in Norristown corruption case
Posted Wednesday, October 04, 2006 3:00:08 PM by Blog57 Team
A businessman who got swept up in a federal corruption probe in Norristown pleaded with a federal judge for leniency yesterday so he could continue to care for his ailing wife. Herbert Bagley, 63, his voice choking, told U.S. Senior District Judge William H. Yohn Jr. that he had to put his wife's earrings on for her because she no longer had any feeling in her fingers as a result of debilitating multiple sclerosis. "I'm not hiding behind my wife's skirt," he said, conceding he had done wrong. "But there's got to be a way that provides for some period of incarceration and also won't destroy my wife financially and emotionally." Bagley's pitch was persuasive. A few minutes later, Yohn sentenced him to 30 months in prison and ordered him to pay restitution of $43,800 to Norristown....

Tech Novelties: Fan Guards Choker, LEGO Earrings, iDog Tank, and ...

With technology pervading every part of our work and home life, it's no surprise that it has made inroads into the hallowed halls of fashion. Tech jewelry by Zelle gives new meaning to the term "wearable technology." While none of these accoutrements, which are sold on the site Pixel Girl Shops, will work your iPod or store your data, their use of components like CPU fan guards ($30, pictured here) and the wires from inside a CAT 5 Ethernet cable ($30) are both innovative and tongue-in-chic to fashion-loving geeks like me. The coolest part? These handmade designs are both easy on the eyes and the wallet. Also while trolling through the site, you will discover LEGO-looking earrings ($95), a Mini Sushi Bracelet ($20), Crocheted Cuties for your iPod ($22), and the iDog Tank ($24)....

Celizic: Eli's legend begins with incredible rally
Posted Monday, September 18, 2006 11:15:42 AM by Blog57 Team
This was no ordinary second-game-of-the-season victory the Giants conjured up against Philadelphia on Sunday. It was the kind of victory that we may look back on as the game that launched a team's season and a player's legend, a victory that years hence fans of both teams will still talk about. Leave it to a wide receiver who sports diamond earrings big enough to have "Titleist" written on them to put things into historical perspective. That would be Plaxico Burress, who out-leaped a badly overmatched Eagle defensive back to haul in the 31-yard touchdown pass that won the game in overtime. The question was whether the game marked Eli Manning's coming of age in the NFL, and Burress answered it by talking about how much better Manning gets every week and how hard he works at his craft....

Turn old jewelry into one-of-a-kind treasures
Posted Monday, August 28, 2006 1:03:42 AM by Blog57 Team
A few weeks ago, I inherited a 10-pound bag of costume jewelry. At first, I didn't know what to make of it. I peeked inside to find a huge, tangled mess of mismatched pieces. Once I took a closer look, I realized it was a treasure- trove of opportunity. I'm talking a major pirate's booty score! With my first scoop I lifted out a handful of shiny, sparkling goodies: several decades' worth of rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, brooches and rings. I cleared off my worktable, whipped out my needle-nose pliers and went to work on major jewelry reconstruction. I turned old pins into mod-looking necklaces, small pendants into earrings, boring necklaces into charm bracelets and so on. The best part? I didn't need to buy a lot of supplies, just a bag of assorted jump rings to connect the pieces....

GORDON: WE SHARE BLAME FOR EURO EXIT
Posted Thursday, August 24, 2006 7:04:03 PM by Blog57 Team
Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon admits the Edinburgh side only have themselves to blame for missing out on the glamorous Champions League group stages. Head coach Valdas Ivanauskas raged at Russian referee Iouri Baskakov after the nine-man Jambos crashed out to AEK Athens 5-1 on aggregate in the final qualifying round. Neil McCann and Julien Brellier - whose first card was for wearing an earring - saw red on a controversial night. But Gordon admits that the scoreline does not lie - even if the referee was on AEK's side. "You have to get on with it," he said. "The referee makes the decision how he sees fit. "All the players are disappointed by what happened but in the end if you look back over the two legs we can't complain....

Hudson an easy target: Looks aside, Illini not kidding about ...

CHAMPAIGN - Don't count on Kyle Hudson shedding his longer-than-most-football-player hair or his earrings just because Illinois football coaches suggest it.Illini coaches also suggested the former Mattoon sports star take a rest after his rare football/baseball freshman year, but Hudson didn't follow that advice either, perhaps tilting his way over the good side.If Hudson's time on the diamond - he hit .370 for the Illini - kept him from improving in spring drills and adding bulk onto his slender frame, coach Ron Zook was not making those complaints public."No, I wasn't disappointed," Zook said. "If Kyle wouldn't have been as important part of the baseball team, I might have been. After baseball season, we thought he looked tired. We tried to give him a week off, and he wouldn't take it. He took two days....

Start of school brings back high-hair memories

It was an innocent search through some old graduation special sections that led to the discovery that became the topic of conversation in the newsroom for longer than I had hoped. While looking for a copy of a 2002 graduation special section, I ran across the section from my high school graduation year. Back then, I had the tall, sprayed-way-too-stiff bangs, complete with the curly permed style of the early 90s. If you flip through the section, my hair matched a majority of the girls who also graduated that year. It was the style and it seemed everyone adopted it to some degree. Some didn't have the height on their bangs that others did and some went with the straight look for the remainder of their hair, while others teased out the sides and the back to create almost a ball effect on the head.By the time I graduated my hair had calmed down but senior portraits were taken the summer before my senior year....
