| Doll and toy museum's future unsure | | Posted Monday, November 13, 2006 3:25:59 AM by Blog57 Team | | FENNIMORE - It's dollars over dolls here since the mayor - after one month in office - proposed earlier this year to pull city funding for the money-losing Doll & Toy Museum. "Something had to be done," museum director Connie Neal agreed. But not this way, not without warning, she said, and not in a way that would leave a 16-year- old treasure and its supporters gasping for space, money and survival. And Neal without a job. Yet this Toy Story doesn't appear headed for a happy ending. Without city funding, the museum - one of the city's main tourist draws - could close Jan. 1, putting the valuable doll and toy collections in limbo. (The city owns about one third of the collection, with the rest on loan from various collectors around the country.) .... | |

| | | Our Choices for Election Day | | Posted Saturday, November 04, 2006 1:18:40 PM by Blog57 Team | | After meeting with the candidates for state and national office, listening to them at debates, reading their literature and researching their backgrounds, the editorial board of Brooks Community Newspapers endorses the following for Election Day, Nov. 7. Governor In only two years, Gov. M. Jodi Rell has accomplished so much that she has to be elected to a full four-year term there's no telling what she can get done. After leading the state out of the dark days of corruption and scandal, the Republican incumbent got right down to business. Pledging to put the state back on sure footing and to restore integrity, Rell urged the General Assembly to approve her proposals for ethics and campaign finance reforms, which have become national models. Years of discussion about the state's problems on the roads and the rails yielded little or no solution until Rell's State of the State Address in 2005, when she proposed the $1.3 billion transportation initiative, which also was approved by the General Assembly.... | |

| | | IBM sues Amazon.com | | Posted Thursday, October 26, 2006 6:59:10 PM by Blog57 Team | | IBM Corp. alleged in two lawsuits Monday that important components of Amazon.com Inc.'s massive retailing Web site were developed and patented many years earlier at IBM. Amazon, which this year will sell $10 billion worth of such things as books, CDs, pet supplies and jewelry, is accused of infringing on five IBM patents. IBM says the technologies covered by the patents govern how the site recommends products to customers, serves up advertising and stores data. Some of the patents were first filed in the 1980s, when IBM created back-end technology for Prodigy, an early online service that grew out of a joint venture between IBM and Sears, Roebuck & Co. One such patent is titled "Ordering Items Using an Electronic Catalog." Amazon declined to comment. | | | Teams distract residents and steal | | Posted Thursday, August 31, 2006 2:59:43 AM by Blog57 Team | | Teams of burglars worked their way into the homes of three elderly Old Bridge residents last weekend by having a woman and young boy distract homeowners while an ac complice entered the houses, authorities said yesterday. This was the second town to report groups of roaming thieves committing so-called "distraction burglaries," by carefully selecting their victims and taking advantage of people's kindness. South Plainfield police last week issued a warning to residents about thieves who knocked on the doors of two people in that borough and asked for help finding a missing pet, getting a resident out of a home while another thief went through the house. To a group of about a dozen women assembled there, Finn explains that her family decorated it together to use as a piggy bank for their dream trip. .... | |
