CARTERET: A brother and two sisters, all in their 80s, were scammed Tuesday by thieves who talked their way into their house and stole jewelry from a bedroom while one of the robbers distracted the residents, police said yesterday. The sisters ages 80 and 88, and the brother, 86, were in their Carteret Avenue home at 5:08 p.m. when a woman knocked on their door, told them she was locked out of her house and needed a locksmith, police said. The woman got inside and pretended to look through a phone book for a locksmith, then suddenly banged her feet on the floor, claiming her feet were falling asleep, police said. When the woman left, one of the victims discovered someone had rummaged the bedroom and emptied jewelry boxes, police said. One of the missing pieces is a $400 diamond ring, police said....

Bleak prospects for the Palestinians

Against a backdrop of the bloodiest internal violence in more than a decade, this was the dilemma confronting the moderate Abbas ahead of his meeting with Rice. What could he tell her, knowing that the US and Europe are refusing to deal with a Hamas-led government? But some officials and aides noticed the reluctance of Abbas to act against Hamas in recent months despite similar threats. They say Abbas lacks the charisma and strength of his predecessor, Yasser Arafat, and had lost control over Fateh, while failing to make the Hamas government accept his peace policies. Hamas leaders accuse Fateh of trying to topple their government and suggest that Abbas is only serving the interests of Israel’s American ally. Between democracy and the respect of the free choice of Palestinian voters on the one hand, and the imperatives of the street, on the other, stands this crisis....

An Abusive Mother: Why the Church Does More Harm to Her Children ...

If you know anything about abusive relationships, you'll know that the pattern is generally "Abuse >>> Buy off >>> Abuse >>> Buy off." Kind of like "Husband beats wife, wife weeps, husband feels guilty and/or wants to get back in Wifey's good graces, husband buys flowers and jewelry for the wife, wife agrees to "kiss and make up," then he hits her again." You may ask yourself why the wife would take him back even once, much less all the time, but the truth is that abusive people are oftentimes thousands of times more scintillating and attractive than The Average Joe, and are very talented at reminding their prey, I mean women, of their good points. But, like the nursery rhyme warns, "When he's good, he's very very good… but when he's bad, he's very very bad." That, in a nutshell, is what Im going to be talking about today....

Police: Late curator offered stolen art for sale
Posted Tuesday, August 15, 2006 2:59:28 AM by Blog57 Team
MOSCOW -- A senior Russian police officer said Saturday that a late curator, who has been the focus of an investigation into the theft of art from the State Hermitage Museum, had offered to sell some of the stolen items to an antiques dealer. Russia's most famous museum announced last month that 221 items worth $5 million, including jewelry, religious icons, silverware and richly enameled objects, had been stolen. The museum, on the banks of the Neva River in St. Petersburg, was the former Winter Palace of the czars. The thefts highlighted lax security and antiquated record-keeping at Russian institutions and underscored the funding crisis that has plagued museums and archives since the 1991 Soviet collapse. Larisa Zavadskaya, the curator in charge of the Russian art collection where the thefts occurred, died suddenly at work when a routine inventory check began last year....

The paper cited Chester Chang, spokesperson of Unity Opto, as confirming that the company began small shipments of LED bulletin boards and outdoors lighting items to customers in the US and Japan in the third quarter. From the fourth quarter onward, the orders are expected to expand and begin contributing to the company significantly, according to Chang. ....

Discover unique treasures, food and entertainment in Santa Fe

Deftly intertwining strands of colorful plastic with lengths of thin silver wire, the woman from South Africa was creating a beautiful basket right before my eyes. Nearby a South American man clad in a straw hat and poncho carefully chipped away at a piece of wood, shaving off slivers to create an intricate geometric design. Watching crafts people from some two dozen countries make their magic was an easy feat at the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market. This premiere July event was the focus of my recent visit to that beautiful Southwest city in the sky. When we planned this trip several months ago, we did not know that the market was to take place that very weekend. I have attended the citys Spanish Market and still long to see its famed August Indian Market, but this international folk art event, now in its third year, was one I had not heard of....
