Santa Cruz Honors Anniversary Of 'America' Naming
Posted Friday, January 26, 2007 3:04:57 PM by Blog57 Team
The Santa Cruz City Council on Tuesday acknowledged a historical anniversary that may not ring a bell, but that they say should. If the name Martin Waldseemuller doesn't sound familiar, perhaps the name he first wrote on a map will: America. In 1507, inspired by the explorations of Amerigo Vespucci, Waldseemuller wrote the word "America" along the coasts of Brazil and Argentina in maps he made as part of a lesson for teaching students about the world. On Tuesday, 500 years after the map was made, the Santa Cruz City Council made an announcement of recognition, which it reports made it the first city in the world to officially recognize the historic anniversary.Santa Cruz not only acknowledged the date, but also the "America500" campaign, which encourages people to learn more about world history.America500 spokesman Ricardo Gaudino explained that the 1507 Waldseemuller map was originally made as a lesson for students, as it was printed in such a manner so that it could be cut and folded into a globe.Gaudino hopes the educational purpose of the 1507 map will translate today to encourage education about not only America, but also about the broader idea of "planetary understanding."Gaudino is concerned about a perceived lack of interest that young people have for world history. The only nation planning to officially commemorate the 1507 map is Germany, which plans to issue a stamp about the naming of America, Gaudino said....

Jim Davis walks into the backroom of a crowded restaurant, his appearance as ordinary as his name. The audience claps politely, but some have trouble picking him out. "He's sterile-looking," whispers a Pensacola grandmother. His face has a schoolboy glimmer. He is also a congressman who looks the part: the black suit uniform, the salt-and-pepper hair, those eternally earnest eyebrows. ....

A ring has been created that reminds men that it's their wedding anniversary. The Remember Ring heats up every hour the day before the chosen date to remind the wearer of its significance. The heat is created by a small internal thermo device. The ring was created by Alaskan Cleve Oines who is in talk with jewellers to get the ring on the high street. He told the Daily Mail: "It converts the heat from your hand into electricity, keeping the battery charged and microchip clock running perpetually. "All you have to do is specify your anniversary date when you order and we'll program it. It will warm up every year a day before your anniversary." A spokesman for Relate said: "If the man hasn't remembered, it can cause a lot of arguments and the man will feel very guilty, especially if he has genuinely forgotten because of work pressures or a busy life style....

Aug. 18 at the Araneta Concert will be very memorable to her and her fans. Her concert is aptly entitled "Vina Morales: Showgirl." She'd really want to make her concert memorable but, contrary to rumors, this doesn't mean Vina will be going topless in any of her concert's segments. The whole concert itself will be memorable because according to her its a tapestry of show concepts she hasn't done before. Thus, it would give her audience the rare chance of watching four different shows of Vina! "No, I won't go topless," Vina laughed at the idea. "But there's a lot of sexy numbers especially in our Bollywood concept wherein I'll do a very sexy dance number. But I don't think Georcell Dapat, our choreographer, would let it look ‘bastusin.' She actually even called it a ‘sacred dance.'" The "Showgirl's" concepts Vina talked about are the Showgirl opening number which she's very excited about, a modern ballroom dancing number, Bollywood and Hip-Hop/R&B segments....
