| New York chic inspires designer's line for Target | | Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 3:17:34 AM by Blog57 Team | | She first made her mark selling expensive ready-to-wear clothes to Saks Fifth Avenue and Jeffrey stores in Atlanta and New York. Now, Behnaz Sarafpour has designed a collection for Target so the masses can enjoy her snappy collection of miniskirts, lace-trimmed sweaters, dresses and a too-cool black trench coat. "My inspiration came from the energy and nightlife in New York," said the Iranian-born Sarafpour. "The fashion is fun and glamorous yet uncomplicated, and ultra-chic, at the same time." Her Target collection, part of the store's Go International series, is available through December. Prices range from $14.99 for a T-shirt to $89.99 for a Persian lamb jacket. Accessories, including jewelry and bags, range from $7.99 to $39.99. By designing for Target, Sarafpour follows in the footsteps of her mentor, Isaac Mizrahi, who designs chic clothing and accessories for the retailer.... | |

| | | How India Can Open $290 Billion Treasure Chest: Andy Mukherjee | | Posted Tuesday, October 17, 2006 7:00:32 AM by Blog57 Team | | Oct. 2 (Bloomberg) -- If the women and temples of India were to sell every ounce of the 15,000 tons of gold they collectively possess, they could buy Citigroup Inc. at a 17 percent premium to the bank's market value. Of course, it won't happen, and not just because selling 10 percent of the world's above-ground stock of yellow metal would depress the price so much that the sale proceeds wouldn't be enough to buy the world's biggest financial-services company. The reason that the idle wealth of India isn't put to a productive use is a combination of economics, demographics, inheritance laws and a deeply rooted cultural affinity for gold. With the onset last week of the annual Hindu festival season, a busy period for jewelry purchases, bullion prices have started climbing, increasing the cost of what is already a colossally wasteful national habit.... | |

| | | On the beady side | | Posted Sunday, October 01, 2006 11:03:24 AM by Blog57 Team | | Whether lustrous as a crystal or luminous as a pearl, whether they're handmade or hand-polished, there's a bead for everyone at Bead Me Up. Customers shop in the comfort of a nearly 100-year-old home at 127 Vista Circle that's furnished with colorful Oriental-style rugs, warm lighting and soft music. At the heart of the business is owner Kirk Kilgore. "I didn't know much about beads," he said. "Then one day my wife bought me a kit that taught me how to make glass beads. And this opened me up to become what I am today." Until recently, Bead Me Up shared space in the building with Eastworld, an import shop formerly owned by Rhonda Sapp. "It was time for me to move into a business that would give me additional schedule flexibility," said Sapp, who sold Eastworld to Kilgore last November.... | |

| | | Delavan Gallery exhibition shows fashion as art | | Posted Friday, September 15, 2006 7:02:12 AM by Blog57 Team | | The minimalist, spacious interior of the Delavan Art Gallery has recently become home to the exhilarating and overwhelming "Fashion, Fashion" show. "Fashion, Fashion," which opened Thursday and runs through Sept. 30, showcases multiple works from 30 local artists and groups. The work ranges from theater costumes to denim miniskirts with safety pins and fuzzy pink hemlines, bridal gowns of reclaimed parts, jewelry made of twigs, mini purses, wool hats, thread lace scarves, fashion illustration and fashion photography. There are items that are wearable, items that are conceptual and items that demonstrate expert craftsmanship. "Fashion Fashion" has a schizophrenic quality, and the inclusion of the illustration and photography seems more like an afterthought than an integral part of the show.... | |

| | | Real Small Business, Real Big Ideas - The Carrie D. Mader Project ... | | Posted Wednesday, August 09, 2006 5:01:30 AM by Blog57 Team | | In part one of this series, I introduced readers to custom jewelry designer Carrie D Mader and our crack team of online marketing consultants. In today's article (which is admittedly late, but hey, I'm 7 and a half months pregnant and running after a 20 month old, sometimes time gets away from you!) I'll be talking about some of the challenges facing Carrie and our team and some of the software solutions that we're going to be putting in place to take care of them. As with many small business owners trying to make a go of it online, Carrie's biggest stumbling block wasn't so much a lack of time or money (though such things DO come into play), it was a lack of understanding of how to move forward. In fact, Carrie summed that sentiment up perfectly in one of our earliest emails, echoing the thoughts that I'd heard from hundreds of small business owners over the years...... | |
