Pearls, pearls, pearls

Pearls are making a comeback this year, after staying back stage for a couple of years. PearlsThey used to be associated with little old ladies wearing a white pearl necklace, having their afternoon tea in a small caffe' in the corner of the street. But now they come in all lengths, in colors you didn't think pearls come in, like pink, gold and black.

The longer the necklace is, the better, and a set of nice pearl earrings and a bracelet would also do nicely, thank you... Pearls, also known as the "queen of gems" have a longer history than any other gem.

Maybe because it was found as part of a search after food, a basic need. Pearls were considered such a rare and expensive item, only royalty and rich people were able to buy them.

We now think about pearls as an almost everyday item, but that has only become the case since the creation of the cultured pearls in the early 1900s.

Throughout history, a necklace made of natural pearls, matching in size and color, was a rare treasure of incomparable value. Think about it next time you are thinking about what jewelry to ware with your suit for work...

Cutting-edge shirtdresses
Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 7:07:40 PM by Blog57 Team
Shirtdresses were once the uniform of 1950s housewives (at least on TV), but these days the style feels more daring, less Donna Reed. On a recent afternoon in Washington's upscale Georgetown district, three women demonstrated how to take the starch out of the classic look, layering their dresses over leggings or jeans and leaving that prim collar unbuttoned -- with nary a strand of pearls in sight. ....

Pearls of Fashion Wisdom from Victoria Beckham
Posted Thursday, November 02, 2006 1:18:33 PM by Blog57 Team
Victoria Beckham has been on a PR offensive today, guesting on several BBC radio shows in a bid to promote her new book entitled “That Extra Half An Inch: Hair, Heels and Everything In Between", out this week. The book is being touted as “a revealing and practical book on fashion, beauty and style" and includes the revelation that "shorts have made a comeback, and as I live in a pretty hot country, I'm so pleased about this". Whatever your opinion of Victoria Beckham, the book is sure to become a bestseller, such is her mass appeal to British women who rightly or wrongly, see Posh as the ultimate style icon of our time. Although it's her name (and picture) on the front cover, when pressed on-air by Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley as to whether “That Extra Half An Inch" is all her own work, Victoria revealed that the book has in fact been “co-written" with fashion journalist Hadley Freeman – quel surprise....

Letter to the editor: Criticism of Sheehan misguided
Posted Thursday, October 26, 2006 11:03:06 AM by Blog57 Team
In response to Kris Miller's letter, the argument that Sheehan rehashed "dogmatic pearls" ignores the fact that more than one war can be considered wrong. Sheehan made generalizations, but the outrageous lies ("errors") surrounding Iraq are equivalent with the falsities that kept Americans in Vietnam. Unjustified slaughter is bad; that doesn't stop being true after one war. And the right's fossilized wartime chestnuts-"we're messing up, but who cares?" and "New options are unpatriotic?" I agree that Sheehan's message would've been more powerful if JFK was indicted, too. However, it was Nixon who began "extra-legally" bombing Cambodia and oversaw the most blatantly unconstitutional surveillance of peaceniks, much worse faults. That JFK's exit plans weren't pushed differs from immoral invasions of combat-adjacent countries....

Endangered mussels reproducing at hatchery

DOLGELLAU, Wales, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Endangered freshwater mussels appear to be doing well at a hatchery in Wales, sparking hopes that they have a future in the rivers of Britain. Seventy pearl mussels at the Mawddach hatchery produced millions of larvae a year ago, The Independent reports. The hatchery now has 70,000 young mussels. The number of mussels had dropped catastrophically because of water pollution, dredging and poaching. The breeder mussels at the hatchery were found in rivers in Wales. The pearl mussel can live to be more than 100 years old, producing millions of young. But scientists had found that many colonies consisted only of old mussels and believe that pollution and other factors were interfering with reproduction. The mussel appears to be very sensitive to water pollution....

How to make pearls look good and you in them
Posted Wednesday, August 30, 2006 3:04:15 PM by Blog57 Team
A natural pearl forms when an irritant works its way into a particular species of oyster, mussel or clam. The mollusk secretes a fluid to coat the irritant. Layer upon layer of this coating is deposited on the irritant until a lustrous pearl is formed. A cultured pearl undergoes the same process, although the irritant -- usually a piece of shell or mother-of-pearl bead -- is surgically implanted and the core is much larger than a natural pearl. When shopping for cultured or natural pearls, look for color, luster, shape, size and surface. The color should be even, no matter what the shade. Perfectly round pearls are rare. The pearls should appear clean and without bumps or pits. The longer the pearl is left in the oyster to grow its nacre casing (over the irritant) the higher the luster; pearls that appear dull are low in quality....
